BlackBerry App Review # 2 : UBERTWITTER

Finding the ideal BlackBerry Twitter client isn’t easy. There are a lot of them, and they all work in subtly different ways. One problem they all try to deal with is BlackBerry’s small screen real estate (even on Storm).

So the best approach is UberTwitter, with a smoothly scrolling bubble view that is more simple and nice.

UberTwitter has everything you expect from a Twitter client, with separate views for @replies and direct messages.

One option reduces the size of profile icons, letting you have more text on the screen at once – worth doing even on large screen devices like the Bold and the Storm. Search is important, and there’s quick access to Twitter search, as well as a list of the current trending topics and hashtags.

You can even use UberTwitter to set your Google Talk status, automatically updating every time you send a fresh tweet. There’s also support for geolocation, using either built-in GPS or cell tower triangulation. You’ll probably want to use the latter, as it’ll keep battery usage to a minimum, even if it isn’t as accurate.

Other awesome features about this Ubertwiter are (source from http://www.ubertwitter.com/)

  • Lists, Lists, Lists!!! - You can create, delete, subscribe, add members, view members, all the functionality you would expect of an Über mobile client!
  • Find People - You can search for people, just like the 'Find People' link on Twitter's home page.
  • New Icon - We love it!
  • Über Bar - We couldn't resist the name! This is a tab bar at the top of the screen, the neat thing is that you can add your own tabs! A list can be a tab, users timelines, and soon saved searches
  • Retweets - We support the old method and new method, you decide!
  • Update Twitter Profile - Yes, you can update your Twitter profile directly from your phone.
  • Profile Picture - We have heard you, upload a picture for your Twitter avatar right from your phone!
  • Report Spam - One menu selection to report a tweet as a spam.
  • Twitter Geo-Tagging - We provide support Twitter's new geo-tagging capability. You can decide whether to use myloc.me URLs, Twitter Geo-Tagging, or both!
  • Friend Picker - Type '@' and a list of your friends automatically pops up allowing selection
  • Larger Avatars - Click the profile picture, and view a larger version! You can even email that larger version!
  • TwitLonger - Yes, you can tweet MUCH longer tweets now, thanks to the folks over at TwitLonger.com, we have fully integrated this capability into both sending long tweets, and automatically retrieving long tweets. We love it!
  • What The Trend? - Ever wonder why certain topics were trending or what they meant? No more! We have integrated with the folks over at WhatTheTrend.com to allow you to see the explanations for trending topics, and also for you to provide your own explanations!
  • Choice of timeline layout - Choose the new 'bubble' layout or the original 'bar' layout.
  • Verified Users - We show a small blue check-mark icon in the timeline to denote verified users
  • Network Connection Logic - We re-worked the network connection logic, things should be alot smoother.

BlackBerry App Review # 1 : BOLT

Starting this week, i will reviewing all top softwares recommended for your Blackberry in a weekly series, and to start at Week 1 - introducing "BOLT" ~ BlackBerry favourite default browser.

Currently running at version 1.6, this application was in the "Top 10 Mobile Apllication" list for 2009 by various website and tech reviews. Why this application is special and better? This is one of the first browser that can act as a default browser for all your web needs. Just a simple download, (then of course, the restart) u can open all your email link, sms link, picture link through this browser itself. Faster and simple clear navigations, you can now stream a video link or Youtube vidoes without breaking sweat in your palm.

As at today, i haven't heard any issues of Bolt running on different BlackBerry models, but as for my Curve 8520, it runs smoothly. Bolt includes some very useful shortcuts to perform basic operations in the browser such as back, forward, view favorites, view history, and much more. Zooming, saving a favourite link and also remembering my passwords comes pretty handy to me as well. The Options available are pretty basic and clear with almost anything I would need from a browser available to me. All in all, I am very happy with this browser, and as what in my own opinion, Opera Mini is now a history.

My new Blackberry Curve 8520

Finally, I got myself on the new Blackberry 8520 Gemini, which was my preferred smart gadget to start my 2010. With a minimum top-up of RM50.00 on my Celcom Xpax prepaid, I bought the device at only RM998.00 without having to suscribe any data plan contract.

To start the Blackberry services, you have to send an SMS instruction of your preferred plan as follows :

I heard there are various advantages and comments on different service providers (Maxis, Digi). However, i don't want to suscribe another postpaid line, so the offer Blackberry on prepaid really caught my attention, as this is a good way (for me) to keep track my bills. =)

Now, as for my first 2 weeks of using it, I would say its really worth a buy. Comparing to the other models of blackberry or other smartphones in the market, this device sure doesn’t put a big hole on your pocket. Below are the specs, which I think suits the entry budget level :

Network : 2G GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900

Size : 109 x 60 x 13.9 mm

Weight : 106g

Display : TFT, 65K colours, 320 x 240 pixels, 2.46 inches

Full QWERTY keyboard + Touch-sensitive optical trackpad

Dedicated music keys, with 3.5 mm audio jack

Memory : Internal 256 MB, expanded Micro SD up to 32GB

Data : GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g, Micro USB

Camera : 2MP 1600 x 1200 pixels, QVGA video

Battery : Standby up to 408 h, talktime up to 4 h 30 min

And now im lovin’ it! =)
